The Corpus Research Center at Minhaj University Lahore (CRC-MUL) is Pakistan's first private institution dedicated to the study of corpus linguistics, language modeling, and the development of advanced language tools powered by artificial intelligence. The establishment of the CRC-MUL marks a significant step toward building corpora for diverse regional dialects as well as local and international languages. The Center focuses on advancing research in language studies, including linguistics, literature, translation, and the creation of computational tools for language analysis. It aims to support research into linguistic patterns, frequency analyses, and the evolving trends within languages using computational techniques. Currently, CRC-MUL is working on several key projects, including the Minhaj Linguistic Archive (MLA), Regional News Corpus of Pakistan (RNCP), Regional Speech Corpus of Pakistan (RSCP), Quranic Translation Corpus (QTC), Sports Commentary Corpus (SCC), Multilingual Corpus of Pakistan (MCP), Manual Text Archive (MTA), Social Media Corpus of Pakistan (SMCP), and the development of Genre-Based Dictionaries (GBD). These initiatives aim to preserve and analyze diverse language data from various sources and genres, contributing to comprehensive linguistic research and technological advancements in the field of corpus linguistics.
The Corpus Research Center at Minhaj University Lahore aims to become a leading institution in the field of corpus linguistics, dedicated to advancing the understanding of language through the systematic collection, analysis, and interpretation of linguistic data. Our vision is to foster the innovative research, provide high-quality educational resources, and contribute to the preservation and promotion of linguistic diversity. The vision of CRC-MUL is to establish cutting-edge technology and tools for compiling, annotating, analyzing language and research in corpus computational linguistics also to develop and maintain comprehensive, high-quality corpora for various languages with a focus on Urdu and regional or indigenous languages of Pakistan.
The mission of the Corpus Research Center at Minhaj University Lahore is to make substantial contributions to linguistics, support the academic community, and advance researchers' understanding of language and communication. CRC-MUL aims to provide specialized training in corpus linguistics, forge partnerships with universities, industry leaders, and research centers globally, and facilitate the dissemination of knowledge through conferences, workshops, and seminars.
The Corpus Research Center at Minhaj University Lahore is dedicated to advancing technology, linguistic study, and education through a range of initiatives. Its primary functions include promoting the significance of linguistic research, collaborating with local communities to preserve regional languages, and partnering with businesses to apply corpus research in areas such as market analysis and language instruction. The center secures funding from national and international sources to support its research and compiles extensive text collections from various media for detailed language analysis. Additionally, it provides training in corpus and computational linguistics, organizes seminars and workshops, and offers internships to give students practical experience in the field.
With immense pride, I reflect on the achievements of the Corpus Research Center (CRC) at Minhaj University Lahore for the years 2023-2024. The CRC has excelled in its mission to advance the study of corpus linguistics, forging significant collaborations with esteemed institution Shanghai International Studies University, China. I, appreciate the center’s dedication to fostering an environment of scholarly excellence, where students and researchers can engage with cutting-edge methodologies in corpus linguistics. I visualize the center becoming a beacon of linguistic research, not only within Pakistan but also on a global scale.
The research conducted at CRC has been groundbreaking, particularly in exploring the intricate relationship between language and Corpus, the innovation of language use, and the impact of technological advancements on language trends. I encourage all associated with the center to continue their pursuit of knowledge with passion and dedication, contributing to the ongoing development and enrichment of the linguistic sciences. CRC has successfully created a vibrant academic community through webinars, workshops, and community engagement initiatives. As we look to the future, I am confident that CRC will continue to enhance its research capabilities, secure further funding, and contribute significantly to the academic excellence of Minhaj University Lahore.
